The Execution of the Jewish Tribe of Banú Qurayẓih:

Historical, Religious, and Ethical Considerations

Mohammad Norozi

2025-05

About: This article examines the historical and ethical dimensions of the execution of the Jewish tribe of Banú Qurayẓih in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (627 CE), an event frequently invoked by certain critics of Islam in order to portray the religion and its followers as inherently violent or bloodthirsty. It argues that such representations often disregard the complex social, political, and military conditions of seventh-century Arabia, as well as the broader moral and spiritual aims of Islam itself. The study seeks to approach this painful and sensitive episode with historical fairness, moral sobriety, and reverence, while rejecting both anti-Islamic polemics and all forms of hostility toward the Jewish people.

Drawing upon statements of Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, together with historical sources and modern scholarship, the article situates the event within the precarious conditions of early Medinan society, marked by tribal warfare, fragile covenants, and the struggle for communal survival. Particular attention is given to the Constitution of Medina, the relations between the Muslim community and the Jewish tribes, and the political and military circumstances surrounding the siege of the Trench.

While acknowledging the severity and tragic character of the execution from the standpoint of modern moral consciousness, the article contends that the sentence arose not from religious hatred toward Jews as a people, but from accusations of covenant-breaking and alliance with enemy forces during a time of existential conflict. It further explores how later Bahá’í teachings transcended and ultimately abrogated the institution of religious warfare altogether, affirming instead principles of peace, reconciliation, and the unity of humankind.
