The Mother Book of the Bábí Dispensation. Comprising nine vahids (unities) of nineteen chapters or babs (gates)—with the exception of the last unity, which has only ten gates—the greater part of the work was written in the prison of Mákú, but, contrary to some prevalent assumptions, the last parts may have been written in Chihriq, after the Báb was interrogated by the clerics in Tabriz. The Persian Bayán abrogates Islamic laws and traditions and sets down new laws and teachings. However, the various laws are discussed as symbols referring to deep spiritual meanings and vehicles to prepare the people for the advent of Him Whom God shall make manifest. Both the form and content of the book affirm the underlying metaphysics of unity in which all things are manifestations of an inner reality which is the revelation of God within them. |

Praise be to God, Who hath created the heavens and the earth by His command, and beyond them those who have believed in God and His signs - these shall verily be gathered unto Him. O my God! How can I call upon Thee, when Thou hast ever been unknowable except through Thine own Self, and shalt ever thus remain [3.5s]... ...I have not claimed a single word of revelation. They say, “He has laid claim to spiritual authority and its trappings.” |

Laments the opposition of Mírzá Yaḥyá; contrasts the stations of belief and disbelief; considers and rejects various theories of the mystics concerning the relationship between God and creation; asserts that, the Godhead itself being unknowable, the means of access to the knowledge of God is through the channel of His prophets; and interprets a line of Rumi’s Mathnaví to the effect that the light of truth is one but that, cast through the glass of different souls, it takes on different tints and colours, which is both the cause of the denial of the religion of God and the source of conflict upon earth. |
